Overview
Ma to Hibiki (間と響き, "Space and Resonance") is a six-piece solo piano suite composed by Kouki Sato. The work engages with the Japanese aesthetic concept of ma — the meaningful pause, the intentional space between sounds — and asks how silence can be as compositionally active as the notes themselves.
The Concept of Ma in Music
In Japanese aesthetics, ma is not merely the absence of sound. It is a presence — a breath, an anticipation, a space that gives surrounding sounds their shape and meaning. Kouki Sato has long been interested in how this concept translates into Western notated music, where rests are often treated as neutral gaps rather than expressive elements in their own right.
In this suite, silences are notated with as much care as the notes. Pedal markings are used to extend resonance deliberately, allowing the piano's natural decay to act as a bridge between phrases.
The Six Pieces
- Ichi (一) — Breath: A single melodic line, unharmonized, with long rests between phrases.
- Ni (二) — Echo: The same melody returns, now accompanied by a delayed shadow in the left hand.
- San (三) — Filling: Texture gradually builds as the harmonic language expands.
- Shi (四) — Weight: The densest movement — full chords, wide registers, sustained pedal.
- Go (五) — Clearing: A gradual stripping away of texture, returning to sparseness.
- Roku (六) — Return: The opening melody is heard once more, now transformed by everything that came between.
Compositional Language
The harmonic language of Ma to Hibiki blends modal scales drawn from Japanese traditional music with contemporary tonal harmony. There are no key signatures used in the score — accidentals are applied individually, reinforcing the sense that each note is a deliberate choice rather than part of a predetermined system.
Difficulty & Suitability
The suite is written at an advanced intermediate to advanced level. Individual pieces can be performed as standalone works, making the suite accessible for recitals of varying length. Ichi and Go are the most approachable for students; Shi requires considerable hand span and dynamic control.
